چکیده

Previous research has demonstrated that defensive pessimists perform best when allowed to think about negative outcomes prior to performance. Two competing hypotheses could account for this phenomenon: negative states dissipate or are harnessed. Existing findings have not directly tested defensive pessimists’ experience during performance, which is critical for resolving the issue. To this end, cardiovascular markers of challenge/threat motivational states were assessed while defensive pessimists and controls completed a test. Before the test, participants were randomly assigned to one of three imagery conditions (positive, negative, or relaxation). Unlike control participants, defensive pessimists exhibited the greatest threat—a negative state—in the negative imagery condition and utilized a more conservative test-taking strategy, thus supporting the harnessing hypothesis. The implications for understanding the relationships between defensive pessimism, motivation, and performance are discussed. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

When Anxiety Is Not Always a Handicap in Physical Education and Sport: Some Implications of the Defensive Pessimism Strategy

In this article we present a defensive strategy that individuals may use to cope with sporting events in that they present the possibility of failure and potential threat to selfesteem. Previous research has indicated that failures in sport and educational contexts are related to high anxiety and low self-estimates of ability. The defensive pessimism strategy lead anxious people to perform well...

The Effect of Encouragement on Defensive Pessimism as an Anxiety Amplifier

The past literature indicates that performance is disrupted for defensive pessimists by encouragement. The goals of this research were to replicate this phenomenon, and then examine the mechanisms underlying it. Specifically, does the encouragement alleviate the anxiety defensive pessimists harness, and thus leave them unmotivated, or does it increase the pressure to perform well and make them ...

Making lemonade? Defensive coping style moderates the effect of stereotype threat on women’s math test performance

People high in defensive pessimism—a coping style characterized by ruminating on worse case scenarios when under stress—perform better under high than low academic pressure. The goal of the present study was to explore whether defensive pessimists might also perform better under high rather than low stereotype threat. Results supported hypotheses: specifically, some individuals’ (e.g., defensiv...

Response of GN Type II and Type III Theories on Reflection and Transmission Coefficients at the Boundary Surface of Micropolar Thermoelastic Media with Two Temperatures

In the present article, the reflection and transmission of plane waves at the boundary of thermally conducting micropolar elastic media with two temperatures is studied. The theory of thermoelasticity with and without energy dissipation is used to investigate the problem. The expressions for amplitudes ratios of reflected and transmitted waves at different angles of incident wave are obtained. ...

تاثیر خوش بینی بر سوگیری توجه در تعامل با هدفداری

Abstract There has been an increasing interest in optimism and its underlying characteristics after the development of positive psychology. Many studies suggest that there is a significant difference between the optimists and pessimists in attention to positive and negative information and stimuli.
